Spending the last two days out in the sun reminded me to post about sunscreens. I know many of you who follow this page are already aware that most commercially available sunscreens are full of more toxic crap than they are doing good. But its a good reminder to share with your friends who are buying these and putting them on themselves, and worse, their children. There are lots of more natural sunscreens out there without all these nasty ingredients, and people are always complaining at how expensive the natural ones are... but did you know you can make your own very simple & effective sunscreen with just basic coconut oil and some essential oils??
We are so conditioned to slather on sunscreen to protect our skin from sun exposure and skin cancer, so why are so many sunscreens (and lotions) loaded with dangerous carcinogens & toxins... contributing to the risk of cancer?
So, here is a very simple, affordable, safe & effective recipe to make your own sunscreen. A few essential oils that offer anti-inflammatory & sun protection properties can be used, and mixed with a carrier oil like coconut oil, you will have even more sun protection - plus, you get the added benefits of both the essential oil and the coconut oil.
Its as simple as an ounce of coconut oil with 5 drops of lavender!
Its best to make them in small batches and store in a cool dark place, ie not in direct sunlight or heat so their properties will not break down. Reapply as often as you would with commercial sunscreens - after being wet, sweating or being out in the sun for a long period of time.
